Lawrence Temple: A Discussion on Name, Image and Likeness (NIL)
About the program:
College sports has undergone a major change — with huge financial implications — by entering the era of “name, image, and likeness”: NIL. This seismic shift in the NCAA’s rules, which allows college athletes to profit at levels previously unimagined, came in 2021 after key U.S. Supreme Court cases and new laws enacted by individual states. Paired with changes in the NCAA’s transfer policies, NIL has changed the game for student-athletes — and college sports as a whole. In this session, attorney Lawrence Temple will share his insights both as a longtime entertainment lawyer with many athletes for clients and as an adjunct professor teaching a course dedicated to the legal aspects of NIL.
Lawrence Temple attended the University of Texas — both as an undergraduate, where he obtained a BBA, and for Texas Law, where he graduated with honors and served on the Texas Law Review. After law school, he clerked on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, and then served as a staff attorney as part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Honors Program. In private practice, he has focused on corporate law and entertainment and sports law. After serving as in-house general counsel of Capital Sports & Entertainment, which spun off two other companies — C3 Presents and C3 Management — he is now a partner with Almanza, Blackburn, Dickie, & Mitchell. His clients include C3 Presents, which produces entertainment events including the NFL Draft, the Austin City Limits Music Festival, and the Lollapalooza Music Festival. Through his clients, Mr. Temple has represented NFL players, Major League Baseball players, Lance Armstrong, professional golfers, race car drivers, and musicians. Beginning in 2024, he has served as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas Law School teaching a course on Name, Image, and Likeness. He has also served on many boards, including the University of Texas Ex-Students Association, West Austin Youth Association, and St. Andrew’s Episcopal School, and he now serves on the Austin Music Foundation board and the University of Texas Development Board.
